Is it also your dream to visit the Great Barrier Reef?
In high school, we were taught in geography class that the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world. And we said to ourselves that we had to see it with our own eyes someday. Although you can dive on the Reef all year round, the best conditions are from late August to early December. That's why we planned our trip for November 2025.

The Great Barrier Reef stretches along the east coast of Australia for more than 2,000 km and is made up of around 600 islands. We thought about which island to choose. In the end, we chose Heron Island – an island nicknamed a natural paradise, where turtles return every year to lay their eggs. A small coral island that can be completely circumnavigated in a short walk, but still offers an incredibly rich world of nature.

Why Heron Island?
Don't expect any big resorts or crowds. Heron Island is all about peace, nature and getting up close to the Great Barrier Reef – which is exactly what most travellers are looking for on this trip. The reef starts right at the beach. At low tide, shallow lagoons are revealed, making it ideal for snorkelling. Even complete beginners can enjoy it without any worries.
Right from the shore you can see hundreds of species of fish, rays, manta rays and reef sharks, which are completely non-aggressive to humans, and brightly colored corals. Heron Island is also one of the most important nesting grounds for sea turtles in Australia. From November to March, green and loggerhead turtles come here to lay their eggs, and a few weeks later, little turtles hatch from the nests and set off on their first journey into the ocean. An experience that is unforgettable.
How to get there?
We flew from Brisbane to Gladstone, from where we boarded the ferry. The journey to the island took about 2 hours (80 km). Just make sure to check if the ferry is running on that day, as it doesn't run every day. Traveling by sea is not the only option. You can also get to the island by private helicopter.
Accommodation
There is only one resort on the island – Heron Island Resort. Don't expect Maldivian-style luxury, but rather an eco-friendly approach, simple but comfortable comfort, and most importantly, complete peace (no town, no shops). The resort has only one restaurant where you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner.
