Lombok: An Indonesian paradise without the tourist crowds

09/06/2025

While Bali is the symbol of tourism in Indonesia, its eastern neighbour Lombok remains a treasure trove for those seeking beautiful nature, authentic culture and off-the-beaten-path adventure.
The island offers stunning beaches, imposing volcanoes, traditional villages and delicious food.

Tips on where we've been and what we recommend

1. Gunung Rinjani
The second highest volcano in Indonesia. The hike to Rinjani is challenging, but the reward is breathtaking views, Segara Anak Lake in the caldera and the feeling of being on top of the world. The trek takes 2-3 days with a local guide.

2. Kuta Beaches (South Lombok)
Not to be confused with Kuta in Bali. This one is quiet, with beautiful beaches like Tanjung Aan, Mawun or Selong Belanak. Ideal for surfing or lazing around.

3. Gili Islands (mainly Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan)
Although technically part of Lombok, the Gili Islands have their own atmosphere. Great for snorkeling with turtles, diving and relaxing by the sea without cars.

4. Traditional Sasak Villages
Visit Sade or Ende villages and learn about traditional Sasak life - local architecture, rice farming and fabric making.

5. Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfalls
Located in the north of the island under Mount Rinjani, they are easily accessible and are among the most beautiful waterfalls in Indonesia.

What we tasted from the local cuisine

  • Ayam Taliwang – spicy charcoal-grilled chicken, typical of Lombok
  • Plecing Kangkung – water spinach with hot sambal sauce
  • Sate Rembiga – spicy beef skewers typical of the Mataram region
  • Beberuk Terong – eggplant with sambal
  • Nasi Balap Puyung – spicy rice dish with chicken and fried ingredients

Lombok is known for its spicier cuisine than Bali – perfect for chilli lovers!
